Many privileged devotees of Hennessy X.O were invited for a night of great food, good company, and of course glasses of Hennessy X.O. Held at the historical grounds of St. Joseph’s Novitiate, Penang. Guests were excited for the culinary adventure that awaits them at the Hennessy X.O Appreciation Grows Gastronomy Event 2012, Penang. They were served with our local classic Kacang Putih, Pistachios in a paper cone, just like the olden days. Inside the paper cone, many were surprised as it revealed recent news features detailing Chef Micheal Han’s pre-event preparations. The menu of the night started with a generous serving of Chutoro and Ginger Pie Tee while local Penang songbird Adrienne Wong entertained guests with a selection of Shanghai show tunes. Another twist to a local dish was the Assam aksa with scallops, other dishes served includes Local oysters baked with duck eggs that was swiftly followed by Sakura ebi and X.O sauce. Chef Micheal Han also turned up the heat with his version of Hokkien Mee and Nasi Kandar where he added ingredients such as Wagyu cheek, Onions and Ash to bring the gastronomic adventure into a fitting finale. What meal would be complete without dessert, and what better way than a nice bowl of ABC with horseradish, hibiscus and rose hips to sweeten the experience. It was a night of groundbreaking displays of culinary creations of Penang’s local favorites by Chef Micheal Han of FiftyThree, Singapore.

World renowned Japanese restaurant Doraku, finally reaches our shores and marks the first outlet outside of the US. Founded by none other than Kevin Y.Aoki of the Benihana restaurant group, he is actually the brother to famous DJ Steve Aoki and sister Devon Aoki. The chic and trendy restaurant servers delicious Japanese cuisine with a twist of Latin and of course, Asian flavours. Heading up the culinary team is Chef Yutaro who was mentored by the famous Japanese Iron Chef Hiroyuki Sakai in 2011. He now has created a custom menu with the finest ingredients just for our local dining pleasure. Here’s some of the few dishes that we recommend.

Snakebite

If you’re looking for something to warm you up or a drink to indulge with your friends, we suggest a glass of Snakebite. Originally from the UK which is also the home to the no. 1 selling cider Strongbow. The beer cocktail is a mix of refreshing cider and Tiger Beer with a splash of grenadine syrup, not Ribena as many of you think. Take a gulp and you’ll be able to taste the crisp freshness of cider and the sweetness of the syrup ends with a mild malty flavor. You’ll enjoy the combination of flavors as it tickles your taste buds but if you’re not too careful, drinking too much will really be a painful snakebite. It’s definitely a must try for you sweet tooths out there.

Ingredients

Strongbow Cider

Tiger Beer

Grenadine Syrup

Method

Fill half a glass with chilled Strongbow Cider

Top up with chilled Tiger Beer

Add a dash of Grenadine Syrup

Serve.

Additional notes

Fruity mouthfeel with sour aftertaste

Drizzle Grenadine to create layered effect

Substitute grenadine with lime cordial for Mexican Snake Bite

Black Velvet

Feeling the need to try something new? We suggest you try out a glass of Strongbow Black Velvet. According to history, a bartender at the Brooks’s Club of London, one of the most premier gentlemen’s clubs in the 1860s created this exclusive drink. It’s a very well balanced beer cocktail which is half and half, Strongbow and Guinness. The yin and yang of this drink can be clearly seen as the golden color of Strongbow sits below the ruby red of Guinness, flexing as the two liquids ‘play’ with each other. It goes down pretty much like cider, bubbly and not creamy like stout. You’ll be able to taste the distinct flavor of caramel that’s more dominant then the apple flavor of Strongbow that ends in a velvety taste of Guinness. You can drink it slowly and go from stout to cider, but we suggest you drink it in big gulps so you can get a right mix of cider and stout or you won’t be able to really enjoy it.

Ingredients

Strongbow Cider

Guinness Draught

Method

Fill ½ glass with chilled Strongbow Cider

Using a barspoon, push the Guinness tap forward gently and pour Guinness draught over the back of the spoon to create a layered effect

Serve.

Additional notes

Bittersweet taste profile with fruity aftertaste

Strongbow Black Velvet is appreciated for finely balancing the crisp, refreshing taste of Strongbow with the bold, distinctive taste of Guinness
